Gummy Smile
There are 6 major causes of a gummy smile
As you can see from the above picture 80% of people show 100% of their teeth.
The causes of the a gummy smile are divided into two major groups
Facially or Lip related (in all these cases the teeth are normal in shape and size)
- your upper lip being short
- your upper jaw bone is longer than normal
- you upper lip is too mobile (ie you can move it too easily)
Dentally related
- your teeth are worn down and therefore your upper teeth have moved downwards. The gums therefore move down with the teeth. (the teeth in these cases look squarish in shape or short)
- your teeth have erupted more than they should have bringing the gums down with them.
- Your gums have overgrown due to poor oral hygiene or mouth breathing
Depending on what the cause of your gummy smile is, the treatment varies
The treatment options for treating a gummy smile includes
- Orthodontics (braces, clear braces, Invisalign)
- Gum recontouring
- Orthognathic surgery
- paralysis of the upper lip with botox
